Shiatsu (指圧) is a form of Japanese bodywork based on ideas in traditional Chinese
medicine. This therapy uses techniques similar to those found in other treatment methods such as
osteopathy, lymphatic drainage and physiotherapy. It could be considered a form of massage,
which is often done through the clothes and incorporates simple points and holds. It includes
awareness of body posture, breathing and exercise. It is an alternative technique that involves
manual pressure applied to specific points on the body in an attempt to relieve tension and pain.
According to the Japanese healing treatment, Shiatsu (meaning finger pressure) massage uses
thumbs, fingers, elbows, and knees to concentrate pressure at certain body parts.
